Water Area Variation and River–Lake Interactions in the Poyang Lake from 1977–2021

Lakes are an important part of the Earth’s surface. Poyang Lake is China’s largest freshwater lake with complex hydrological relationships and unique rhythmic changes. There no systematic understanding relationship between watershed area river–lake connectivity. In this study, using remote sensing imagery, data, meteorological land use surveys, we investigated changes in water from 1977–2021. addition, examined potential impact factors analyzed influence interactions on area. The results showed that decreased during study period. River runoff sediment load basin main affecting Additionally, Three Gorges Dam impoundment situated upper reaches Yangtze weakened eliminated block reverse flow into Lake, causing to decrease toward end flood season 2005 dry 2003. Changes lakebed elevation caused by sedimentation anthropogenic activities have also accelerated shrinkage Overall, indicate variations primary cause significant observed last five decades.
